PJM Generation Asset Monitor Update | Capacity News
This update provides a high-level overview of our January 2025 PJM Generation Asset Monitor (GAM) report and database. The PJM GAM tracks the Interconnection queues for additions, forecasts plant retirements and plants deemed at risk of retirement, and provides an outlook for the timeline of renewable generation projects in PJM, MISO, NYISO and ISO-NE.
PJM GAM Update includes:
- Status of all projects with active generator interconnection queues in PJM.
- Listing of facilities that have commenced commercial operations.
- Facilities that have started construction.
- Retirements, including units added to PJM’s Deactivation list or with revisions to their deactivation date.
Here are some highlights from the recent PJM GAM.
Additions
- Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ Gans Solar Farm commenced commercial operations in November, 2024.
- Homer City plans to Repower. Homer City Redevelopment expects to demolish retired 2,012 MW coal plant in Q1 2025, and repower the units with natural gas. The owner expects the repowering project to take two years after the coal-fired units are demolished. At this point, it is unclear if the developer has interconnection rights.
Retirements
- Last December, PJM announced that its existing Reliability Must Run (RMR) agreement with NRG for the continued operation of Indian River Unit 4 will be terminated on February 24, 2025. Prior to this announcement, PJM anticipated that this RMR agreement would be in effect through December 2026. However, since Delmarva Power completed necessary transmission upgrades ahead of schedule, this unit can now be deactivated without causing grid reliability issues.
